Last September, I started working with a client who is, genuinely, the whole package; architect, constructor, and interior designer. When she lit up during one of our 1:1s talking about materials, textures, and how a single design choice can rewire how an entire space feels, I got it immediately. She wasn’t just describing interiors. She was describing what I do with brands.

Because she’s right: it’s not about building a space. It’s about what that space makes you feel.

From Our Strategy Session to NeoCon

One of the first things I do with clients is map out their annual calendar of authority. Which conferences, events, and gatherings are the ones your people actually want to be at? Where does your audience show up hungry to learn, connect, and be seen?

The strategy is simple: identify the moments that matter in your industry, align your brand presence with the ones you can actually own, and create something valuable there, not just attend.

For her, that answer was easy. NeoCon. Chicago’s world-leading commercial interior design event, held every June at The Merchandise Mart. She’d been before. She knew the energy. And it’s the place where the next year’s material trends, color palettes, and spatial experiences get decided.

The Part I Want to Talk About: The Recap

A week after NeoCon wrapped, I received the official event recap newsletter in my inbox.

And I have thoughts.

Lately, beyond my client work at Rosa Tech, I’ve been deep in the practice of building culture and community, co-building Mercado Mondays for the Latino tech community in Chicago, leading Fuckup Nights Chicago, and doing the brand and operations work that makes both of those things feel like something. So when I see a well-executed (or not-so-well-executed) recap, I notice things.

A great event recap does four things:

Shows the brand: consistently, intentionally, in every frame

Shows the product or service: not in a catalog way, but in a alive way

Surfaces the highlights: the moments that made people glad they were there

Shows the people: a lot of people

That last one is the one most brands underinvest in. People interacting with the product. People talking to other people. A hand running across a texture. A face reacting to a room. That’s the content that converts strangers into community.

What you capture depends on what you’re building, and what emotions you want people to walk away feeling.

Design Creates Culture

There’s an interior designer whose speech captures this better than I ever could. (Dennis Scully, check it out.)

And Robert L. Peters said it plainly:

“Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future.”

That’s not just a quote for a mood board. That’s the operating system behind everything I build — at Rosa Tech, at Mercado Mondays, at Fuckup Nights.

What people see in your photos, your videos, or hear about through word of mouth: that becomes your culture. And your culture tells people what to expect from you. What you stand for. Where you’re going.

The problem I see over and over

In my role as a Creative Director and Brand Strategist, I guide startups and founders from chaos to clarity. And here’s a pattern I see far too often:

Beautiful UI. Great copy. But mismatched iconography and illustration.

Icons that look stocky next to minimalist typography. Illustrations that feel childish on a mature product. Or worse, a brand voice that says “premium” paired with visual assets that scream “template.”

Why does this happen?

Because we forget:

Icons and illustrations are brand components.

They should reflect your tone, elevate clarity, and reinforce user habits, not just “fill in space.”

Let’s decode the decision-making

If you’re building a product, app, platform, or any tool, here’s how the best brands align their visual assets across UI, marketing, and storytelling:

1. Start from your brand core, not a marketplace

Big tech doesn’t guess. Google, Stripe, Airbnb, they define an illustration system, not just styles. Your icons and illustrations should reflect your brand personality, whether that’s warm and human or sleek and utilitarian.

Ask: Is our brand more friendly or functional? Editorial or playful?

That answer should guide your icon stroke width, illustration style, and color use.

2. Match your UI tone

If your app uses sharp typography, flat colors, and fast interactions, your icons should echo that with geometric, bold linework. If your app is soft, mindful, and calming, go organic, light, and rounded.

Pro tip: Font + Icon harmony = subconscious trust.

3. Extend it to marketing and website

Users don’t just see your product in isolation. They meet your brand on Instagram, your landing page, your pitch deck.

Consistency here creates brand coherence.

Same strokes. Same character. Same emotional energy, across every touchpoint.

A visual exercise: next time you use your phone…

Look at your favorite apps… what do their icons feel like? Are they:

• Playful? (Duolingo, Notion)

• Editorial? (Medium, Substack)

• Minimalist? (Apple, Slack)

And then… look at your own product.

Do your current illustrations belong in the same family as your UX, voice, and users?

My POV: It’s about emotional UX

Because when visuals align with voice, and brand aligns with behavior, magic happens.

Users don’t just use your app, they trust it, come back to it, and recommend it.

That’s what we’re designing for.

My work lives at the intersection of identity, systems, and human behavior. I don’t just help brands “look pretty”, I help them feel right.

Final thoughts

Your icons and illustrations are not an afterthought.

They’re tiny brand ambassadors. Every time a user navigates, confirms, or gets stuck, they’re relying on visuals to guide them.

Let’s stop treating iconography as filler. Let’s design it like we mean it.
